Our Founders
MarrKens Learning Academy is so named to honor the legacy of its founders, Margaret Rose Murray and her husband, Kenneth Bernard Murray. Their mission was to establish a school where young children could grow physically, socially and cognitively in a warm and nurturing environment. They believed this could best be achieved by incorporating African American history into the preschool curriculum. By providing this knowledge at an early age, a strong foundation is laid for the growth and development of the child. Thus, the name reflects their dedication and belief in the value of early learning and the inclusion of contributions of African Americans to society.
“We believe when children can see themselves as contributors to the good of the whole of society, they are motivated to do their best”. MarrKens will continue to be a place where bright futures begin, to kindle a lifetime of positive learning experiences and academic achievement.
